UPDATE: Massive fire at Rocky Mount recycling plant now 100% contained

OCKY MOUNT, N.C. (WITN) – A massive fire at an Eastern Carolina recycling plant is now 100% contained.

The Rocky Mount Fire Department says crews worked overnight, and this morning, crews are making sure there are no more hotspots.

Officials say crews will return to normal operations after firefighters clear all hotspots.

Rocky Mount says fire crews were first sent to Rocky Mount Recyclers just before 11:00 p.m. Wednesday night.

The fire has consumed acres of crushed vehicles that were headed to recycling.

Thursday afternoon, workers were dismantling unburned debris to help firefighters get to the center of the fire.

Meanwhile, pollution levels in Nash, Edgecombe, and Wilson counties were elevated Thursday at 100, which is at the top of the moderate range, according to the North Carolina Environmental Quality. This morning, the fire department says the area’s smoke conditions are very low.

Moore said so far no one has been injured and they will start investigating how it started.

The facility is on Community Drive next to Interstate 95 on the west side of the city.

In addition to the Bailey Fire Department, the North Carolina Forest Service, and Nash County Emergency Management have helped Rocky Mount.

The chief said they’ve had fires before at the facility, so the firefighters know how to attack fires there.
