NEW INFO: Greenville officer released from hospital after being shot

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – A Greenville police officer who was shot last night has been released from the hospital.

Greenville police say Officer Jeremiah Lovelace is now recovering at home. Lovelace has been with the department for eight years.

Lovelace was shot Tuesday night after responding to a possible domestic violence call on Glendale Drive.

At first, it was unclear if Lovelace was injured by shrapnel from the door or actually shot. Police later confirmed while the officer was at ECU Health Medical Center that gunfire wounded him.

After the shooting, a 5-1/2 hour standoff began with Jonas Fucito barricaded inside the apartment, according to police. It ended with the 31-year-old man being taken into custody around 2:00 a.m.

Fucito has been charged with attempted murder.

Police also say a 9-month-old child who was in the home with him is safe and was not injured.

Fucito has a lengthy criminal record. His most recent conviction was for assault/threat against a government official a year ago. Other convictions include identity thefts, vehicle thefts, and breaking and entering.

He is being held without bond at the Pitt County jail.
